If you are new to the sport and are thinking of purchasing your first airsoft gun, the sheer variety of guns and the number of choices available to you can be utterly bewildering. Beginners often have trouble understanding the differences between the various types of airsoft guns, and many eventually purchase one based purely on looks. There are certain guidelines that you can follow to help you make the right choice as you explore the full range of airsoft gun types from airsoft rifles to electric airsoft pistols to gas-operated airsoft sniper rifles.

Budget

Before you even start looking at airsoft guns that you might possibly want to buy, you should first determine just how much you are willing to spend. Your price range will affect just what type of gun you can afford and which brands you can consider and which brands you can skip over. You should also keep in mind that as a beginning player, you will also need to purchase the gear and accessories that go along with using airsoft guns. The most important of this additional gear being a pair of safety goggles that you must wear whenever you are using your airsoft gun.

Model

This is the criteria that most beginners use when purchasing their first gun, since most airsoft enthusiasts are also gun enthusiasts, and they start off already having a favorite gun which they then purchase in airsoft form. Generally speaking, there are five major categories of airsoft gun model. These are pistols, submachine guns, assault rifles, machine guns and sniper rifles. The easiest method of telling these categories apart is the length of the barrel, with the pistols having the shortest barrels and the sniper rifles having the longest barrels. While there are a few exceptions to this rule, it is generally a good guide to identifying the category a particular gun belongs to.

Beginners usually start with a pistol or a submachine gun, because these are the easiest guns to handle as well as maintain. Rifles and machine guns are longer and heavier, making them harder to use in the playing field. Assault rifles, machine guns and sniper rifles are usually high powered, making them potentially dangerous in the hands of a beginner who might fire them accidentally and or miss and hit an unintended target.

Personal Preference

No matter what might be said about the types of airsoft guns and their suitability for beginners, you are ultimately spending your money on something and you should spend it on something that you like. There is no point taking all the advice offered to beginners on purchasing an airsoft gun only to purchase one that you do not really like.

So while your friends might advise that you get one of the electric airsoft pistols or submachine guns, but you really want to start with one of the airsoft rifles and you are certain that you will not be happy otherwise, then you should go with what you really want. Airsoft is, after all, a sport that you are meant to enjoy.
